The narrative of the Community Centre traces back to its acquisition by the Parish Council in 1974, initally referred to as The Parish Hall. Although modest in structure, it hosted various activities including a playschool operating three or four mornings a week, a weekly lunch club, as well as social gatherings such as the Grassmoor Friendship Club, which still remains an active user group to this day.
Over time, the Centre became a hub for numerous weekly gatherings, encompassing a youth club, exercise groups, baby clinic, and the mobile library, fostering a vibrant community spirit.
Around two decades ago, a transformative phase ensued with a substantial grant totalling nearly £1,000,000 from the Lottery Fund and other sources. This funding facilitated a significant overhaul, resulting in the creation of a new entrance and the establishment of a dedicated car park, marking a pivotal moment in its evolution.
Today, the center operates as a registered charity under the stewardship of a management committee comprising Parish Councillors and representatives from various user groups. Its diverse range of activities caters to a broad spectrum of interests and needs within the community.
Present-day users include the W.I., Parish Council meetings, a Slimming group, the National Childbirth Trust, Guides, Brownies, Athletics enthusiasts, as well as the Derbyshire Unemployed Workers offering vital benefit advice to the community
Notably, the Reaching Out project stands out for its commendable efforts, organizing Christmas meals and Easter celebrations for the elderly residents of the village. Additionally, they extend their support to those unable to participate in person, ensuring they feel connected by delivering gifts and fostering a sense of community.
In addition, the Derbyshire Toy Library provides a vital space for babies and toddlers to socialize, a need further accentuated by the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Efforts are underway to secure funding to sustain this valuable resource, underscoring the center’s commitment to meeting evolving community needs.
